Nataly von Eschstruth
Nataly von Eschstruth was a German novelist whose fiction often moved through aristocratic households, courtly settings, and the pressures created by rank and reputation. Her short story The Gray Nun reached English readers in Lionel Strachey’s translation. It follows a young traveller detained at a royal court during carnival season, where a masked celebration brings him face to face with a silent figure dressed in gray religious clothing. The encounter begins amid music and social display, then turns toward memory, secrecy, and the supernatural. Project Gutenberg classifies the piece as both a short story and a ghost story, a useful indication of its compact structure and uncanny design. Eschstruth also published the German novel Die Bären von Hohen-Esp, showing that this brief translated work represents only one part of a much larger career. The Gray Nun remains distinctive for using the elegance of a palace gathering as the setting for an increasingly unsettling recollection.
