Nathan Field, also known as Nathaniel Field, worked as an English actor and playwright whose stage experience informed his dramatic writing. The Fatal Dowry was composed with Philip Massinger and reached print in 1632, although scholars place its creation earlier in the Jacobean period. The tragedy follows Charalois, whose devotion to his imprisoned father draws him into debt, marriage, betrayal, and a severe contest between honor and justice. Field's contribution belongs to a collaborative theatrical culture in which dramatists often shared plots and scenes. Modern editions have restored attention to both authors, including the 1918 critical text edited by Charles Lacy Lockert Jr. Field also performed with major London companies and wrote plays independently, so his career joined the practical work of acting with literary composition. The Fatal Dowry remains one of the clearest examples of his collaboration with Massinger and of the morally charged tragedy produced for the early modern commercial stage.
