Nick Cave

1957

Nick Cave is an Australian musician, songwriter, novelist, screenwriter, and visual artist best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Stranger Than Kindness approaches his creative life through images and words, reproducing artwork, handwritten lyrics, photographs, and personal objects selected in connection with an exhibition at the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen. Canongate published the book in 2020. Cave developed and curated it with Christina Back, while Janine Barrand and Darcey Steinke contributed commentary and meditations. The resulting volume is less a conventional chronological memoir than an archive of working materials, recurring ideas, and visual associations. His prose bibliography ranges from the novels And the Ass Saw the Angel and The Death of Bunny Munro to the poetic travel work The Sick Bag Song and Faith, Hope and Carnage, a book-length conversation with Seán O’Hagan. Cave’s writing, music, film scores, and visual work repeatedly test how a story changes when it moves between page, stage, sound, and image.
