Oliver Spafford

Oliver Spafford created The Picture Alphabet, a children’s primer from Erie, Pennsylvania, published in 1850. Capital and lowercase letter forms open the lesson, followed by pairings of letters with animals or familiar objects. Antelope accompanies A, bull appears for B, and the visual sequence continues to zebra for Z. Spafford treats X differently, explaining the difficulty of finding an English word that begins with that letter instead of forcing an unsuitable example. Additional illustrations follow the main alphabet, extending the book's vocabulary beyond the twenty-six letters. Its short labels and image-led arrangement made letter recognition, animal names, and visual association part of the same lesson. The Picture Alphabet belongs to the American alphabet-book tradition of its era, but its open note about X gives the lesson an unusually candid touch. Spafford's compact design lets modern readers see how an 1850 primer combined basic literacy with picture-based instruction.
