Peter A. Levine

1942

Developed Somatic Experiencing after asking why prey animals routinely survive life-threatening attacks without lasting damage, and concluding that the trembling and shaking afterwards is the nervous system discharging a mobilised response.

Waking the Tiger argues that human trauma persists partly because we override that discharge, and the therapy works with bodily sensation rather than with narrative.

Levine holds doctorates in medical biophysics and psychology. The approach has a large practitioner network and considerably less controlled trial evidence than the enthusiasm suggests, which is worth knowing before choosing it over therapies that have it.
