McGraw took a doctorate in clinical psychology in 1979 and spent roughly two decades in practice and in trial consulting in Texas. His firm advised Oprah Winfrey's legal team during the 1998 beef defamation trial in Amarillo, which is how the two met and how the weekly segments began that grew into his own programme in 2002. He let his Texas psychology licence lapse in 2006, saying television had left him no room for a practice. Life Code appeared in 2012 through Bird Street Books, a small house rather than a trade publisher, and was sold with a companion video. Its argument is that a minority of people are predatory by design and that they can be identified and outmanoeuvred.
