Author: Randolph Caldecott
Randolph Caldecott transformed familiar rhymes into picture narratives in which gesture, pacing, and comic detail carry as much meaning as the words. The listing Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury X points to his illustrated Ride a Cock-Horse to Banbury Cross, while The Fox Jumps Over The Parson’s Gate shows his lively treatment of a traditional hunting song. The Complete Collection of Pictures & Songs gathered these and other picture books in 1887 through George Routledge and Sons. Wood engraver and printer Edmund Evans reproduced Caldecott's drawings, and Austin Dobson supplied the collection's preface. Caldecott often lets figures enter and leave across successive images, giving nursery material a sense of performance and movement. His work with Evans helped establish a model in which text, color printing, and sequential illustration were conceived as one reading experience. That approach explains why his name later became attached to the American Library Association's medal for distinguished picture-book art.
