Rashid Buttar held a doctorate in osteopathic medicine and ran the Center for Advanced Medicine in North Carolina. The 9 Steps to Keep the Doctor Away argues that most chronic illness follows from accumulated toxins and that the body repairs itself once they are cleared, and it sat alongside a practice offering chelation, intravenous vitamin C, ozone and hyperbaric oxygen, and alongside supplement lines he sold. The North Carolina Medical Board brought charges over his treatment of children with autism. In 2010 he accepted a reprimand under a consent order in which he acknowledged that treating an out-of-state child he had never examined was unlawful; the board dropped its remaining complaints and he kept his licence. He became widely known again from 2020 for opposing coronavirus vaccination. He died on 18 May 2023, aged fifty-seven, of a cause his family did not disclose.
