Robert Valentine Dolbey
Robert Valentine Dolbey served as a British military surgeon and recorded medical and everyday experience during the First World War in East Africa. Sketches Of The East Africa Campaign grew largely from letters written during his service with the Royal Army Medical Corps. After returning to England, he arranged those observations into chapters about transport, hospitals, disease, surgery, landscape, wildlife, and the varied personnel supporting the military operation. The book appeared in 1918 with illustrations and editorial help from H. T. Montague Bell. The original title leaf identifies Dolbey as a captain and as the author of A Regimental Surgeon in War and Prison. His preface carefully limits the book's purpose: it does not claim to be a complete strategic history, but offers the view available to an individual participant. That perspective makes logistical and clinical conditions central, showing how distance, climate, supplies, and illness shaped service alongside formal military events.
