Rusty Young

1975

Marching Powder is the story of Thomas McFadden, a British drug trafficker running tours of the Bolivian prison he was locked in, a place where inmates bought their own cells and drugs were manufactured on the wing. Young, an Australian, went in as a tourist and stayed three months living in the prison to record it, then several years writing it up. It sold over a million copies and made San Pedro a backpacker destination, which was not the intention and is worth noting. He later wrote a novel about Colombian paramilitaries and practised law. He died in 2021.
