Fellows was arrested at Bangkok airport in 1978 on a drug trafficking charge and served twelve years in Thai prisons, most of it in Bang Kwang, and The Damage Done is what he wrote afterwards: the beatings, the disease, the men who did not come out. He does not claim innocence and does not ask to be liked, which is why the book has stayed in print in Australia for thirty years and gets handed to teenagers by their parents. He was released in 1989 after a royal pardon. He has said he wrote it so that nobody would need to find out the same way.
