Sarah Luddington reimagines Arthurian legend through romance, fealty, and battlefield obligation. Lancelot and the King begins the Knights of Camelot sequence with Lancelot banished in disgrace and separated from Arthur, the sovereign he loves. When war threatens Camelot, he answers the summons despite what returning may cost him. The novel therefore places private devotion beside service to country, royal command, and a knight’s damaged honour. Published in 2011, it establishes a continuing story carried into Lancelot and the Sword, Lancelot and the Grail, and later volumes. Familiar armor, courtly duties, and military danger remain part of the setting, yet Luddington shifts attention toward the choices behind heroic reputation. Lancelot must decide how openly he can acknowledge love while still acting within the demands of kingship and war. That conflict gives the opening volume its connection between Arthurian adventure and an extended account of loyalty tested by separation, secrecy, and return.
