Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell
Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell (1865-1940) was a British physician and medical missionary best known for his work among the fishermen and settlers of Newfoundland and Labrador. Arriving on the coast in 1892, he built hospitals, nursing stations, and cooperative stores to serve remote communities, and his exploits, including a famous night adrift on an ice pan, made him a celebrated figure on both sides of the Atlantic. He was knighted in 1927 and wrote numerous books drawing on his Labrador experience.
