Norman Duncan combined fiction, journalism, and teaching in a career remembered for stories shaped by Newfoundland and other demanding northern settings. The Measure of a Man, first published in 1911 by Fleming H. Revell, moves to the lumber camps of the American woods. Its central figure, John Fairmeadow, is a clergyman working among lumbermen rather than a conventional adventure hero. Duncan notes that incidents drew partly on missionary experience, while cautioning readers not to treat Fairmeadow as a portrait of one real person. The narrative follows questions of faith, responsibility, violence, parenthood, labor, and moral authority across episodes in isolated camp communities. Duncan had already established his reputation through Doctor Luke of the Labrador and stories connected with maritime life. The Measure of a Man broadens that regional interest without abandoning his focus on people tested by harsh work and distance. Its title points less to physical endurance than to the choices through which Fairmeadow’s character is judged.
