Stephen Baxter uses speculative history to explore how geography, technology, and collective decisions redirect entire civilizations. Bronze Summer is the second volume of his Northland trilogy, following Stone Spring and preceding Iron Winter. In Baxter's alternate prehistory, the people of Northland preserved the land where the North Sea would otherwise have formed by building a vast wall. Generations later, during the Bronze Age, that engineered society faces pressure from eastern empires and survivors associated with Troy. Gollancz published the British edition in 2011; Roc followed with a United States release during 2012. Baxter's official bibliography identifies the novel as Northland Book Two, while the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction classifies the sequence as prehistoric science fiction. The title's scale is characteristic of his work, but its changes unfold through communities coping with trade, migration, conflict, and inherited infrastructure. Bronze Summer asks how a successful intervention in nature can become both a civilization's foundation and its continuing responsibility.
