Sue Miller
1943
Families under strain have been Sue Miller's subject since her first novel. Born in Chicago during 1943 and educated at Radcliffe, she was a single mother working in day care while writing her early stories; The Good Mother arrived in 1986, held the top of the bestseller lists for months and reached cinemas in 1988 with Diane Keaton in the lead. Monogamy, from 2020, opens on the sudden death of Graham, a genial Cambridge bookseller, and stays with his widow Annie as she learns he had been unfaithful and finds her mourning and her anger arriving together. Miller has taught at Amherst, Smith, Tufts, MIT and Boston University, and has held a Guggenheim Fellowship.
