Titus Livius, commonly known in English as Livy, was the Roman historian who composed an extensive narrative of Rome from legendary beginnings to his own age. Roman History Books I-III presents the opening portion in an English edition whose recorded title includes a comma after History. These books move from Aeneas and the foundation traditions through the kings to the early Republic, combining civic memory, exemplary character, political conflict, and legend. Project Gutenberg credits Duffield Osborne as editor and William Jackson Brodribb, Alfred John Church, and John Henry Freese as translators. Their work makes this particular English text a collaborative edition of Livy’s Latin history, not an unmediated modern composition by the ancient author. Livy’s larger history survives only in part, yet the opening books became especially influential because they shaped later accounts of figures such as Romulus, Lucretia, and the early consuls.
