Titus Lucretius Carus was a Roman poet and philosophical writer active during the first century BCE. On the Nature of Things presents Epicurean thought in six books of Latin verse, moving from atoms and the void to perception, mind, mortality, the natural world, and the development of human society. The poem argues that physical causes, rather than divine intervention, explain natural events. Its literary method matters as much as its doctrine: analogy, vivid scenes, and carefully ordered argument make difficult ideas tangible. Little secure evidence survives about Lucretius's life, so modern accounts rely chiefly on the poem and a small number of later references. The work nevertheless became a major route through which readers encountered ancient atomism, especially after its recovery and circulation during the Renaissance.
