About this book
A Book for a Rainy Day, or Recollections of the Events of the Years 1766-1833, is by John Thomas Smith. The preface says the author collected numerous scattered biographical papers and considerably augmented them with a variety of subjects, arranged chronologically, according to the years of his life. The preface also owns that the work is what ought to be called a salmagundi.
A note to the reader says the events related until the writer's fourth year were communicated to him by his parents, and that his statements from that period are mostly from his own memory. The section headed 1766 gives the writer's father as saying that on the evening of the 23rd of June 1766 the writer's mother was returning from a visit to her brother. A note on Michael Dahl (1656-1743) says he was born in Stockholm, settled in London, and became the rival of Kneller.
