About this book
John Stow, called Citizen of London on the title page, wrote this survey of the city, and this edition has an introduction by Henry B. Wheatley. One passage says the Fleet dike was cleaned in 1502, so that boats with fish and fuel were rowed to Fleete bridge, and that a fifteenth was granted by a common council in 1589 for cleansing it again.
Another passage follows the Walbrooke through the city to the Thames, with bridges along its course. A passage on Wood street lists the lanes running off it, among them Lad lane, Love lane, Addle street, Huggen lane and Maiden lane. A further passage recalls quarrels between Londoners and the men of Westminster, mentioning wrestling on St. James' day in 1221 and a baker's loaf at Salisbury place in 1391.
