About this book
Dante and the Early Astronomers is by M. A. Orr, credited on the title page as Mrs. John Evershed. Its frontispiece shows Dante studying, from a fresco by Luca Signorelli at Orvieto. The pages sampled explain old ideas of the heavens. One passage describes the system of Philolaus, with a Central Fire and a planet called Antichthon, or Counter-Earth, added so that the total came to the sacred number ten, and figures show night and day on an earth that makes half a revolution in twelve hours.
Other pages turn to the poet. They note Dante's fondness for describing the time at one place by mentioning another, picturing a glorious sunrise in one country while it is high noon or midnight in another, and they mention Folco of Marseilles. A further passage describes the planets, saying that Venus and Mercury are never seen very far from the sun and appear sometimes before him near sunrise and sometimes after him at sunset.
