About this book
A Little Southern Beauty by Mrs. Alex. McVeigh Miller includes a chapter titled Vivian Is Sorry, in which Vivian goes to the door of the school-room where Madame Orne sits alone cutting the leaves of a new magazine. Vivian asks to come in and talk, and Madame Orne answers fondly. The chapter begins with a verse about words that cannot be taken back.
In one passage a man tells Madame Orne a story about a young orphan who married a wealthy Frenchman named Monsieur Orne, and she answers him with cold scorn. Another passage mentions a photograph of Musa Van Dysart hanging on a wall, a wreck, and Doctor Max Verne, said to be sole heir to his uncle's property. Vivian says Max loved his uncle dearly, and a visitor named Eve leaves with a reminder not to forget to come to her wedding.
