About this book
A sequence of biblical events becomes a classroom history in G. F. Maclear's account of the Old Testament. The contents begin with creation and the patriarchs, then pass through Moses, the judges, and the reigns of David and Solomon. Later sections follow the kingdoms of Judah and Israel, captivity, and the times of Ezra and Nehemiah. Chapters on the tabernacle, priests, offerings, festivals, and civil laws place religious practice alongside the narrative.
The passage about Saul and Jonathan shows how Maclear turns an episode of battle into a lesson about authority and rash decisions. Saul imposes a fast upon his followers, while Jonathan, unaware of the vow, eats honey during the pursuit. Scriptural references accompany the account, and the opening discussion treats creation as an act of God. Maps, notes, chronological tables, and an index of people and places help readers follow the sequence of biblical events and study nineteenth-century religious teaching.
