About this book
Old English preaching and an English translation appear together in this first volume of Aelfric's Christian homilies. Published in 1844, Benjamin Thorpe's edition presents the original language alongside his rendering of the sermons. His preface discusses the manuscripts used to establish the text, the Latin writings behind the homilies, and uncertainties about the author's identity. These editorial pages give the reader a view of how medieval religious writing was prepared for a later audience.
The sermons explain passages of scripture through comparisons and moral instruction. In the excerpt on Christ's command to preach, stones, trees, animals and angels help explain humanity's place among created beings. A further passage connects belief with baptism, conduct and good works. Readers interested in early English language or Christian thought can study both the wording of the original and the teaching it conveys.
