About this book
A Coal From The Altar, To Kindle The Holy Fire of Zeale is a work by Samuel Ward. The text is described as a Sermon preached at a generall Visitation at Ipswich, by Sam Ward, Bach. of Divinity. A letter addressed to a reverend friend, Mr. Samuel Ward, says the writer copied the sermon of Ward partly from his mouth and partly from his notes, and has adventured it into the light.
The sermon says that zeale has been little practized and lesse studied, and calls this heavenly fire a stranger upon earth. The sermon says, as the speaker conceives, that what Christ strikes at in Laodicea is her complexion and not her constitution, her practice not her orders, personall lukewarmnesse not legall. The sermon asks how unfit and base a quality Cowardice and Fearfulnes did Nehemiah think it for a man of his place.
