About this book
St. Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians: A Practical Exposition is by Charles Gore. The preface says that the favourable reception accorded to an exposition of the Sermon on the Mount has encouraged the author to attempt another practical explanation of a portion of the New Testament. The book says that St. Paul, who convicts the law of inadequacy as an instrument of justification, has come to perceive that the true means of justification is faith, the simple acceptance of the divine favour freely offered.
The book says that common union with and under Christ in the Spirit is not anything less than union with the one and only God and Father, and that this unity is the deepest and most ultimate conceivable, with a width and range from which no one can be excluded. A note titled The Conception of the Church (Catholic) in St. Paul in Its Relation to Local Churches says that by far the most frequent use of the word church or churches in the New Testament is to designate a local society of Christians or a number of such societies taken together.
