About this book
Martin Luther's Commentary on the Epistle to the Galatians is dated 1535 and is translated by Theodore Graebner. The contents list a preface, extracts from Luther's 1538 introduction and chapters 1 to 6. In the preface its writer says he was asked to prepare an edition for the American market and wanted to make Luther talk American.
In one passage Luther says people should not speculate about the nature of God but begin with Christ, quoting Paul on Christ crucified. Another discussion sets out a twofold purpose of the Law, the first being civil, to restrain wrongdoing, compared to iron bars that hold back a lion and a bear. A further passage about the false apostles and the Galatians says the Gospel exists to give glory to Christ and the mercy of God.
