About this book

The prefatory note sets out a history of inland transport and communication, beginning with the earliest times. The account of manorial services quotes an observation that carting seems to have been the service a lord could least easily dispense with. The discussion of towns connects defective communications with comparatively little movement and competition in manufactures or among workers.

A railway discussion records a clause carried in the House of Lords in 1836 that would have allowed Parliament to deal with any railway company during the next year. The assessment of canal revival says there is no reasonable ground for expecting much from the projected scheme. The assessment names the natural unsuitability of England's undulatory surfaces for artificial waterways and the enormous cost of a general revival scheme among its considerations.
