About this book
The everyday oath supplies Julian Sharman with material for a history of language, manners and public life. Published in 1884, his account begins among the writers and theatrical hopefuls of the Scufflers’ Club, a Covent Garden tavern gathering described through its room, habits and members. The chapter headings then point toward ancient and medieval expressions, religious and military oaths, stage dialogue and attempts to control swearing by law.
Sharman’s examples connect turns of speech with the circumstances in which people use them. He discusses how “by Jingo” became attached to a political faction and examines Jonathan Swift’s imaginary Bank of Swearing, whose proposed income comes from statutory fines. These episodes give readers interested in word histories concrete links between language, politics, comedy and social authority, while preserving the author’s nineteenth-century way of interpreting them.
