About this book
Markets, kitchens, castles and workshops give P. L. Jacob a way to explain how people lived during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This historical study connects everyday customs with the institutions that governed property, work and social standing. Its opening sets out an interest in ordinary households as well as rulers, and the contents range from food and clothing to games, hunting and municipal rights. Illustrations drawn from early prints and manuscripts accompany the account.
The discussion of commerce examines the restrictions placed on French merchants and the later formation of trading companies. A section on guilds turns to the shared interests of artisans, apprentices and masters. These details make the volume useful for readers interested in the organization of daily life, especially the connections between earning a living, belonging to a community and holding public privileges. Its historical explanations also reflect the outlook of its nineteenth-century author.
