About this book
The contents list the origin of clubs in coffee-houses and taverns, alongside clubs of the past and old and new beefsteak clubs. The Windham owes its name to the mansion’s former resident, William Windham, who was considered a model of the true English gentleman of his day. The Windham was founded by Lord Nugent for people linked by literary or personal acquaintance.
The Bachelors’ elects only bachelors and requires a member who marries to face a ballot to remain. The account says Graham’s was at that time the headquarters of whist, and reports that it was said Lord Henry Bentinck invented the call for trumps.
