About this book
Primitive Athens as described by Thucydides is by Jane Ellen Harrison. The preface says Mythology and Monuments of Ancient Athens has been for some time out of print, and that the writer has decided to issue no second edition. The text says Thucydides himself tells us that the Dionysiac festivals were two. The text says his use of the comparative in ‘Dionysos-in-the-Marshes,’ he says, ‘to whom is celebrated the more ancient Dionysiac Festival,’ makes it clear that, to his mind, there were two and only two.
The text says the Greater Dionysia was celebrated in the precinct of Dionysos Eleuthereus, and that the time, as noted before, was the month Elaphebolion. A list of names followed by numbers includes, among others, Herakles, Herakles Alexikakos, Herodes Atticus and Hermes.
