About this book

A debate about translating the Odyssey sits beside observations on sculpture, prose style and the fallibility of critics in Samuel Butler's collected notes. Published in 1912, the volume contains selections arranged and edited by Henry Festing Jones. Its short entries range across literature, philosophy, music, painting and ordinary incidents, giving readers a view of Butler's opinions without requiring a continuous narrative.

The discussion of translation shows how personal those opinions can be. Butler argues for carrying an author's spirit into a new language, and challenges assumptions about who composed the Odyssey. Elsewhere, a sculptor's confused account of an English monument becomes an occasion to consider mistakes and the evidence needed to correct them. Readers interested in literary criticism or the working habits of a writer will find compact arguments, recollections and observations suited to reading a few at a time.

About the author

Samuel Butler

Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was an English author, painter, and iconoclast who spent formative years sheep farming in New Zealand. A relentless critic of Victorian religion and morality, he is best known for the satire Erewhon and the posthumous novel The Way of All Flesh.
