About this book
The Elements of Style is by William Strunk, Jr., listed as professor of English in Cornell University. The contents list rules of usage, among them to form the possessive singular of nouns by adding 's, to use a comma after each term in a series of three or more terms with a single conjunction except the last, and to enclose parenthetic expressions between commas.
The rule on possessives says to follow it whatever the final consonant and gives Charles's friend, Burns's poems and the witch's malice as examples, and the text names as exceptions the possessive of ancient proper names in -es and -is and the possessive Jesus'. The text calls it an old observation that the best writers sometimes disregard the rules of rhetoric, and says that, unless the writer is certain of doing as well, he will probably do best to follow the rules. One rule says that the relative pronoun should come, as a rule, immediately after its antecedent.
