About this book
The preface argues that grammar should begin as a study of thought rather than remain mainly a study of rules and definitions based on word forms. The preface makes the sentence the unit of study and asks that words be examined through their function in communicating thought. The explanation of local clauses notes that such clauses often denote condition as well as place, while an idea of time sometimes accompanies place.
The treatment of subjective complements explains that a prepositional phrase often replaces a predicate adjective, usually because no adequate adjective expresses the phrase's meaning. The discussion of clause position describes a construction in which a clause modifies the subject but stands next to the subjective complement.
