About this book

A Gentleman-at-Arms is subtitled Being Passages in the Life of Sir Christopher Rudd, Knight, and is by Herbert Strang. The opening page says the passages are "as related by himself in the year 1641 and now set forth by Herbert Strang". The contents list names Christopher Rudd's adventures in Hispaniola, France, the Low Countries, Spain and Ireland, among others.

The narrator, on the lone island of Tortuga, watches a red man lie down on dried grass so that the smoke from his fire may be carried across him, and guesses this to be a device for warding off the insects. The Captain of the Guard steps forth with the silver shot in his hand and enters upon a discourse with Volmar, who stands waiting by the culverin. The narrator espies Mac Shane, a good way off, swing himself from the top of his ladder and throw one leg across the wall, plying a doughty sword against an ancient servitor that sought to stay him with his pike.
