About this book
The Captain of the Wight is subtitled A Romance of Carisbrooke Castle in 1488. The preface says that to the writer's mind there is no more picturesque period in the history of Western Europe than that of the Renaissance. A character named Jasper calls Ralph brother and says that his peregrine will fly faster than Ralph's gerfalcon, as they ride along on their small ponies towards Chute Forest.
The text says it was now Ralph's turn, and as he rode out to take up his place, the interest of the crowd was very great. Magdalen cries out that if only there were quicksands, and her father says there are: the bay is full of them as the tide rises.
