About this book
A verse asks the reader not to like a single line, but to like a title that the speaker says was taken from a better man. The dedication places the physician almost as a rule among the men who stand above the common herd. The discussion of spelling says that proper spelling has largely been retained, with a table of common vowel sounds and modification marks provided.
The poem In the States contrasts youth growing great, strong and free with age that must decay. The speaker in A Portrait compares himself to an ape and describes taking a solemn place at mankind's feast while defiling the dinner plate. The verse addressed to Doctor John Brown says the speaker had set out to praise the doctor while he was still among them, but the doctor is now gone and cannot hear.
