About this book
Tragedy is a book by Ashley Horace Thorndike, professor of English in Columbia University. The preface says the book attempts to trace the course of English tragedy from its beginnings to the middle of the nineteenth century, and to indicate the part which it has played in the history both of the theatre and of literature. The preface says all tragedies of the sixteenth century are noticed, because of their historical interest and their close relationship to Shakespeare.
The text says Aristotle declared the effect of tragedy to be the purging of the emotions, and calls this a somewhat obscure expression. The text says that in “The Revenger's Tragedy” the skull of the betrothed takes the place of the apparition, as does the skeleton in “Hoffman.” The text says that for three hundred years Englishmen have been writing tragedies, all much alike, all related in origin, nature, and purpose.
