About this book
Halleck's New English Literature by Reuben Post Halleck presents a concise account of the history and growth of English literature from the earliest times to the author's present. The preface gives special emphasis to literary movements, the qualities distinguishing periods, and the spirit animating each age. The author's stated purpose is to awaken in students an enthusiastic desire to read the works of the authors discussed.
The account of manuscripts describes early Anglo-Saxon poetry as transmitted through memory before a few people transcribed a small portion of current songs on parchment. The discussion of fiction credits Richardson with transferring the real human life around him to its pages. The assessment of Candida places the dramatic action wholly within the mental states of its three chief actors.
