About this book
A Guide to Methods and Observation in History is a book by Calvin Olin Davis. The introduction says the outlines have grown out of the necessities of a course conducted by the writer in the training of teachers in the University of Michigan. The introduction adds that the work has consisted of one class meeting per week for eighteen weeks, and of twenty hour-observations of history teaching in the Ann Arbor High School.
The book lists definitions of history, among them that history is the science of the development of men in their activity as social beings and that history is past politics. A list of aspects of history names military, political and constitutional, ecclesiastical, economic, industrial and commercial, educational, literary and social. The text asks, among other questions, whether the students devote much time to map-making and whether wall maps are used frequently. The contents list names sections among others called The Classroom, The Assignment of the Lesson and The Review Lesson.
