About this book
The book is called A History of English Versification. The text says that dancing may be looked upon as the typical form and source of all rhythmic movement. The text explains that arsis in its ancient signification meant the raising of the foot or hand, to indicate the weak part of the measure, while thesis was the putting down of the foot, or the stamp, to mark the strong part of the measure.
A section says that many sections of the narrative poems of Coleridge, Scott, and Byron, for example the latter’s Siege of Corinth, are written in this form, with which four-beat verses often alternate in especially animated passages. The text says that a powerful impulse was given to sonnet-writing by Wordsworth, who wrote about 500 sonnets and has been called the English Petrarch.
