About this book
John D. Quackenbos's Illustrated History of Ancient Literature, Oriental and Classical is accompanied with engravings and colored maps. The text gives an extract from the inscription of Una, a general of the VI. Dynasty (2400 B.C.), saying that the army went in safety and devastated the land of the Bedouins. Under the heading Classical Age of Egyptian Literature, the text says that after the Archaic period there is a great blank in Egyptian history, but about 2100 B.C. we begin again with trustworthy accounts.
The text says the versatile genius of Ennius displayed itself in satires, epigrams, and didactic poems, as well as in epics and dramas. The text says the Book of Rites prescribes rules of conduct for all occasions, from the most important down to a mere interchange of greetings.
