About this book
English Verse: Specimens Illustrating its Principles and History is chosen and edited by Raymond MacDonald Alden. The preface says that the aim of the book is to give the materials for the inductive study of English verse. The preface adds that the materials extracted are those necessary for the study of English verse-forms, with notes designed to make the specimens intelligible and useful.
The extracts include lines from Tennyson's Locksley Hall, Swinburne's March, Beowulf and a piece called The Farmer's Complaint, marked ab. 1300. Lines credited to Tennyson's The Princess include a moment hand to hand, and sword to sword, and horse to horse we hung. The text explains that, in its table, the cesura has been recognized only when there is a grammatical or rhetorical pause so considerable as, in most cases, to require a mark of punctuation.
