About this book
Cheshire is a book by Charles E. Kelsey, with ten maps and forty-nine illustrations. The preface says the aim of the volume is to assist the study of the progress of the English people by an examination of local antiquities, visits to ancient sites and buildings, and suggestions of big national movements from local incident. The text says Delamere was once a deer forest extending as far as Nantwich, but in the last hundred years the greater part of it has been cultivated.
The text suggests some readers have perhaps stood by the beacon on Alderley Edge or by the sham ruins on the summit of Mow Cop and viewed wide stretches of the Cheshire Plain. The chapter headed THE MAKING OF CHESHIRE asks when and how the beds of rock in a quarry were formed and laid down. The text names Abbot Simon Ripley as one of the greatest of fifteenth-century builders in Cheshire, who rebuilt the upper parts of the nave and south transept of the Abbey Church.
