About this book
Beginning with the islands on a world map, Charles Dickens explains England's past through scenes of trade, settlement and conflict. Ancient Britons and the Romans introduce a history arranged largely around successive rulers. Details of metalworking, boats, horses and chariots give the early chapters a concrete setting, while the narrator addresses young readers directly and offers firm opinions about the people he describes.
Later chapters bring the same storytelling voice to struggles over government. In the account of Jack Cade's rising, complaints from Kent lead to an armed march into London, followed by plunder and resistance at London Bridge. Written for children, this history combines an outline of political events with sharp character judgments and lively explanations. Readers today can use it to explore Dickens's way of making the national past intelligible to a young audience, including the assumptions and moral emphases of his own period.
