About this book
Living lights is by Charles Frederick Holder. The title page calls the book a popular account of phosphorescent animals and vegetables. A chapter headed “Lamp Shells” says that in the little bivalve Pholas the phosphorescence is almost hidden, though in all the forms previously mentioned it is conspicuous.
The writer says that in walks about the San Gabriel Valley a peculiar beetle, a large, black fellow, cannonades the writer, if touched, with a fluid of iodine color, which has a most disagreeable odor. The text says that in Brazil a certain agaric is famous for its vivid luminosity. The text says it is not impossible that the light-emitting faculty of sea-pens is under control, and that if a specimen which is not luminous is disturbed, it immediately becomes so.
