About this book

A Hundred Anecdotes of Animals is by Percy J. Billinghurst. An anecdote tells of a gardener who, in removing some rubbish, discovered two ground toads of an uncommon size, weighing no less than seven pounds. An anecdote tells of a soldier doing duty at the castle of Cape Town who kept a tame baboon for his amusement, and of the evening it broke its chains unknown to him.

Maldonata fell into the hands of the Spaniards and, brought back to Buenos Ayres on the charge of having left the city contrary to orders, was condemned by the governor, a man of cruelty, to a death. The soldiers found her alive and unhurt, though surrounded by lions and tigers, which a lioness at her feet kept at some distance. A shepherd renewed the search for several successive days, and on his return in the evening found that the dog had been home and, on receiving his usual allowance of cake, had instantly disappeared.
