A. L. O. E.'s picture story book is a book of stories by A. L. O. E. The preface says a portion of the stories in the volume have appeared in the “Children's Paper,” but the greater number have never before been published. The preface says A. L. O. E. feels something like a labourer who, when wearied by heavier work, can yet tell stories on a winter's evening to the little ones gathering around his chair.
A story about Ben has him see a delicious pink cake and, forgetful of his own words, catch it up and hurry away down the street. The text says Ben had committed his first theft, had forgotten the words of his mother, and had broken the law of his God. A story about a parrot has the children take great delight in teaching the parrot to speak, while poor Fidele is described as nothing but an ugly hairy dog. Grace never spoke of her dove during the rest of that day, though she thought of it often.
