About this book
An old house in a quiet London suburb provides the meeting place for Master Humphrey and his circle of listeners. Beside his clock and chimney corner, this solitary older narrator offers the prospect of companionship through stories. Charles Dickens builds a frame around the people who tell, read and hear these tales, with Mr. Pickwick and familiar friends joining the gathering. The preface also explains the weekly form of the work and the author's wish to sustain a close connection with his readers.
Within that friendly setting, the stories can move into a livelier world of local fears and comic evasions. In one passage, a messenger from Kingston seeks someone brave enough to investigate reported witchcraft, while John Podgers and a farrier find reasons to pass the task along. The contrast between alarming reports and comfortable excuses gives the scene its humor. Readers interested in Dickens's storytelling habits will find both the imagined company around the clock and the voices of the tales they share.
